DELEGATION FROM SHANGHAI HUANGPU DISTRICT BUREAU OF JUSTICE AND ELITE YOUNG LAWYERS VISITED GALLANT

A delegation of 18 elite young lawyers from Shanghai Huangpu District (“SHD”), led by Mr Mao Yongjun, Deputy Director General of SHD Bureau of Justice, and 4 other officials of SHD, visited our firm on 13 June 2019. They were greeted by our Managing Partner, Brenda Lee, our Head of Commercial Department, Philip Wong, and other lawyers.

During the visit, two partners of our Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department, Dennis Chan and Michael Kan, delivered a seminar on Litigation and Dispute Resolution as well as Arbitration in Hong Kong. The seminar was well-regarded by the participants.

“In the afternoon, members visited Gallant, which is situated on 5/F, Jardine House, 1 Connaught Place, Central, Hong Kong. They were greeted with warm hospitality by Managing Partner of the firm, Brenda Lee, together with 7 partners including Philip Wong, Dennis Chan and Michael Kan.

Gallant was established in 1977 and is one of the largest and most well-known local firms in Hong Kong with currently about 40 solicitors. It has Guangzhou and Shanghai representative offices in China. Dennis Chan, partner of Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department and China-Appointed Attesting Officer, introduced the civil litigation system in Hong Kong and the relevant litigation procedures. Also, in relation to the Arrangement on Reciprocal Recognition and Enforcement of Judgments in Civil and Commercial Matters between the Courts of the Mainland and of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region signed by the Supreme People's Court and the HKSAR Government on 18 January 2019, Dennis Chan elaborated in details on the current situation, what challenges lawyers handling cases involving enforcement of mainland judgments should take note.

After that, Michael Kan spoke about Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Hong Kong. He compared the characteristics, scope of cases and procedures among the major arbitration institutions in Hong Kong and gave an introduction about mediation in Hong Kong. It was followed by his in-depth analysis on the recognition and enforcement of mainland arbitral awards in Hong Kong through several typical case studies. In addition, he provided practical suggestions on how to enhance the chances of having mainland arbitral awards enforced in Hong Kong.”
