Our Managing Partner Mr. Philip Wong attended the 2025 Meritas Annual Meeting in Mexico City from 9th to 11th April 2025 and was invited to speak to Meritas lawyers (together with fellow panelists from the US, mainland China, India and Malaysia) on the re-globalization process in the international trade relations between mainland China and ASEAN countries. Our firm is the sole member firm to Meritas in Hong Kong since 2005.

Mr. Philip Wong highlighted a number of special roles that Hong Kong could play in the process, and in particular the following legal and commercial opportunities were discussed:

  2. Hong Kong a key member to the Greater Bay Area with over 86 million population;
  3. ASEAN Hong Kong Free Trade Agreement;
  4. Free flow of capital, people, goods and information in Hong Kong;
  5. Common law legal system and its independent judiciary with Court of Final Appeal in Hong Kong;
  6. Hong Kong a signatory to many global trade, finance and legal conventions including the WTO and New York Convention;
  7. Low and simple territorial-based tax regime in Hong Kong with no capital gain tax; and
  8. Hong Kong easy access to mainland China's financial market and wealth management opportunities.
